Project Community C.U.R.E.

Connection, Unification, Reflection & Evolution

There is a lot going on in the world right now, and many people are very affected by it. Organizing small, informal community meetings is an excellent way for people in the community to give and receive support – particularly in communities where there is stigma or resistance about reaching out for support in this way. People may feel more comfortable in an informal setting or even online, simply talking with others in their community.

The mission of Project Community C.U.R.E. is to create spaces that empower all people in all communities to give and receive support regardless of race, creed, sexuality or gender. The goal is to create supportive spaces that are of the community, for the community by the community.

When organizing gatherings, the key is to remember that we're coming together to talk about how we feel, not to solve the world's problems. This is a place where everyone can talk about how they feel without being judged or feeling pressured. We don't have to agree with each other. We just need to listen and be heard ourselves. We want to CONNECT with each other and UNIFY our community through this connection. We want to REFLECT upon how we feel and EVOLVE through our reflections.

To create a community outreach meeting in your area:

  • Decide on the frequency of the gathering(s)

Once a week, once a month, one time only...

  • Decide on a group size and pick an appropriate venue

Small groups (less than 20) and casual venues are best. Online is great, too.

  • Determine appropriate safety rules and boundaries for the gathering(s)

No swearing, no interrupting, no threats or hateful speech, no arguing, no politics, no judgments, etc.

  • Advertise the gathering(s)

Craigslist, Facebook, Instagram, fliers, rec centers, church and other community places are all good places to advertise.

  • Be patient

In many communities, there is a stigma against reaching out for support.

It's a good idea to have a list of community services you can give to people in the event that they would like to reach out to someone for more support. You can announce this at the beginning of the meeting, the end, or simply leave out/email a printout of the list.

This will be expanded in the future. Download the current one sheet here.
