Meditation can be intimidating to people. They often worry that they can't clear their mind or they can't relax. The truth is, if you don't think you can meditate, you need to meditate!
Though you may have some anxiety, don't worry. It's not really something you can do wrong. The point of mindfulness meditation is to relax and learn to observe your thoughts or feelings instead of reacting to them. This takes practice and focus, but it is not impossible by any means.
Many people think something is "supposed to happen" when they meditate, and if it doesn't, they feel that they've done something wrong or done it incorrectly. Meditation is more about nothing happening, so relax! You don't have to clear your mind and you don't have to transcend your body in mindfulness meditation. You just need to relax.
Ideally, you'd want to start small and meditate for longer and longer periods. You can start with 3-5 minutes a day and build from there. Music may also help you focus. Even just small amounts of meditation daily can reduce anxiety enormously. It helps you put some distance between your thoughts and your reactions so that you can learn control.
How to meditate:
Get in a comfortable position
Breathe slowly and normally (from the belly instead of the chest)
Focus your attention on your breathing
When thoughts come, acknowledge them
Redirect your attention to your breathing
Keep doing that
That's all there is to it! The point is to observe your thoughts and feelings without reacting to them. It is to learn to calm and control your focus and your attention. Over time, you will eventually learn to do this even when you are not meditating. That's the point of mindfulness meditation.
Once you've mastered this, you can move on to learn about other types of meditation, or you can simply continue with mindfulness meditation and enjoy the many benefits it brings into your life.
Meditation has so many benefits for your mind, body and soul. It has been proven to reduce blood pressure, aid in concentration, reduce anxiety, help with chronic pain and much more. Literally just five minutes a day can make a huge difference in your life. Enjoy and breathe!
